Accreditation in Malaysia
The Ministry of Health Malaysia has been working
on the idea of hospital accreditation since May
1993. In November 1995, a workshop on
accreditation was held with participants from
the Ministry of Health and the Association of
Private Hospitals of Malaysia. The consensus
agreement were as follows:
- An independent and non-profit making
organization to administer the accreditation
program in the country.
- The Accreditation Program shall be
voluntary and independent of government
agencies, organized and administered by
healthcare professionals under the auspices
of a society.
These led to the formation of the Malaysian
Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) that was
registered with the Registrar of Societies on 17
October 1997. A WHO Consultant from Australia
(Australian Council of Healthcare Standards) has
been providing the guidance in the development
of the Malaysian Hospital Accreditation Program.
The Australian approach has been adopted in the
developing the processes and standards. However,
it has been adapted to local needs and
conditions.
Why Accreditation in Malaysia?
- Currently there is a wide variation in
the standards of services between public and
private healthcare providers
- Accreditation helps to establish common
national and internationally recognized
standards.
- To provide the best possible care to the
patients (achieving optimum results from
available resources)
- To ensure the right person doing the
right things right with the right process
and equipment, in the right (safe)
environment to the right patient with the
right (good) outcome.
